detail from a 44"x 46" painting
oil on linen

The setting is a ranch in Oklahoma where the family was vaccinating and tagging cattle. I loved watching the cutting horses and their riders as they worked. When this youngster was allowed to leave the safety of his seat on the fence to join in, he was accompanied by this old, trustworthy horse. I enjoyed painting this portrait of the boy's intense and determined face, paired with his sleepy and more experienced equine companion.
