Self-portrait

My name is David Kline and I live in central Colorado between Denver
and Colorado Springs. My interest in art began as a child when I liked
copying the Sunday comics in the newspaper. Soon after, my interest
moved to a series on tv in the fifties about drawing by John Nagy.
My education in art progressed into high school, college (University
of Colorado) and individual instruction (Art Students League). l also
studied commercial art but my interest in portraiture and the human
form was foremost in what I liked to do. My portfolio includes children's
portraits, business portraits or executive portraits, family portraits
and individual portraiture as well as landscape and object art.
My goal in producing a portrait for you is capturing the essence of the person in the
most technically proficient way possible without losing the painterly quality of the
piece. My painting portraits isn't about producing an oil photograph but producing an
artistic portrayal in an aesthetic sense, with personality, rhythm and pulse. I strive
hard to achieve the elusive but astonishing illusion of believing that cloth and colored
pigment becomes the essence of the person portrayed. When it happens it's magic and
performance to the highest degree, whoever does it successfully.
I've drawn from, learned and borrowed from some of the best and they are Burton Silverman,
Richard Schmid, Nicolai Fechin, Ilya Repin, Sargent, Kim English, and Mary Cassatt.
