I've
been fascinated by beautiful art since I was a small child. I've always
liked to draw and paint, but considered it only a hobby until I reached
adulthood. After returning to college to complete my BFA degree, I
soon became passionate about the fine art of portrait painting. Combining
a love of the oil painting medium with an appreciation for the beauty
and complexity of God's special creation, I decided to focus on fine
oil portraiture. I have worked hard to master the technical knowledge
and skill of the "classical realism" style that has long
been established in history.
I study the work and techniques of the great masters such as Vermeer,
Titian, Michelangelo, and my personal favorite, William Bouguereau.
Since leaving college I have continued my studies under the direction
of modern masters Robert Liberace and Peggy Baumgaertner. Also,
I recently completed 60 hours of training with Cynthia MacMillan
through the Academy of Realist Art.
I choose oil paints because of the lasting quality of the medium,
the richness of the hues, and the optical qualities of transparent
glazes. I am drawn to the style of classical realism because it
allows me to create the illusion of space and depth on a flat surface.
I thrive on the order and discipline required of the classical oil
painting technique, too.
I've enjoyed teaching art to children at a classical school in Williamsburg (grades
K through 7), and have used my training in the Monart Technique to teach at a local
Monart Center. I offer summer art workshops to local children as well.
I plan to continue my work in Fine Portraiture. I am challenged to capture not only
an accurate physical likeness of my subject with skill in draftsmanship, but to take
the medium further-to point the viewer to the Creator of all beauty, the Lord Jesus
Christ, for it is to Him that I dedicate my life and work.
