Your portrait of my children is so natural and comfortable that I find myself smiling everytime I walk past it. Your ability to bring your images to life amazes me.

— Glenna Racioppe

Procedure

Typically, I do portraits based on an initial sitting. I take digital photographs and sometimes video (to capture animation and provide additional dimensional perspective). I may also do a preliminary drawing or color study as time permits. Clients are invited into the studio to consult during certain stages of the process. If working long distance, I typically email pictures of the work after the initial setup, after the monochrome underpainting, and in the event that any adjustments are recommended. It is important that the client is involved throughout the process, as their time permits. A final sitting may be desirable.

While I always use my own photographs for reference, I typically do not paint from a particular photograph presented to me. Even when exceptions are made, I still request an initial sitting, if at all possible. Working from life not only enables the human quality of interaction so important to capturing the individual but also provides the critical information regarding illumination and animation that is simply not available from the flattening and lifeless effect of a photograph. Having said that, I have done a number of posthumous portraits and will freely work from a large number of photographs and rely on significant input and collaboration with the client to get things correct.

Portrait Terms

Pricing for oils runs from $800 for a child head-only to as much as $8000 for formal adult portraits, with monochromes at roughly half price.

My pricing is directly based upon the amount of time I expect will be necessary to deliver the portrait you desire. Variables influencing cost include such factors as the number of required sittings, backgrounds and clothing, size and postures and the nature of the subject matter involved. These variables will be discussed on our first meeting, and a firm price which works within your budget will be decided upon. Please contact me and I will email you a current price sheet with samples of different work and the price for each, so you have a very good idea as to pricing before we ever meet.

A non-refundable $300 deposit is required to reserve a spot on my calendar. One third is required as a deposit on portraits over $3000. Reasonable travel expenses for portraits outside of the immediate St. Louis, Missouri area are additional.
