From Library Journal: Kullberg is a born artist,
self-taught and highly accomplished. In her first book,
she proves to be a born teacher as well. She thoroughly
and engagingly explores the details of the tools and techniques
necessary for every element of creating portraits. Colored
pencil is a medium that requires little money, no setup,
no cleanup, and no health concernsjust as much hard
work and talent as any other medium. With her fresh enthusiasm,
Kullberg makes the work a pleasure. Collections that have
Lee Hammond's similar Drawing Portraits in Colored Pencil
from Photographs (North Light, 1997) may want to add this
as well. In choosing between the two, Kullberg's personal
approach edges out Hammond.
Reader review: A must-read for any serious artist. I
sat down with the book and did the excersises and I was totally
shocked that the portrait that I had tried to draw many times
before had actually worked once I had read the book!! A day
before, I could never have been able to produce a piece with
such a likeness to what I was trying to draw.
In the first section of this book, six artists create a portrait
of the same model, working from identical reference photographs,
for stunning variations. The second section of the book shows
ten artists' self-portraits. It includes expert advice on every
aspect of painting portraits, from working with a photo to developing
a composition to mixing skin tones.
With this surprisingly simple step-by-step guide, anyone can
create beautiful pet portraits. Anne deMille Flood walks readers
through her easy techniques for rendering cats, dogs, birds,
horses and other cuddly friends.
Beginning and intermediate artists will appreciate the close-up
demos for getting the texture of fur and feathers just right.
There's also clear instruction on working from reference photos,
choosing focal points and getting started.
This is an essential reference for anyone who wants to create
animal portraits in colored pencil. Artists will quickly find
themselves drawing better than they ever thought possible!
