From the collaborative effort she forms with her clients, Ayers begins to develop the artistic direction the portrait is going to take. Inspiration comes from the homes, gardens and pursuits of her subjects. Although all portraits are painted from photographs, the painting begins through the visualization of form, color, quality of light and gestures. A series of thumbnail sketches are created to develop the idea before a photo shoot.

After clothes, props, and location are decided on, a photo shoot is scheduled with Ayers' photographer, Jennifer Delgado, of Manasquan Shores, NJ. Delgado has the sensitivity to timing and light which is essential to the success of the painting. A former fashion model featured in French Vogue among other magazines, Delgado is as comfortable behind the camera as she is in front of it. Her more recent experience as a mother of four children helps her grasp the possibilities and limitations of sittings involving children of varying ages. With their mutual understanding, Ayers and Delgado collaborate in a successful partnership.

After photographs are reviewed and selected, a fine detail pencil drawing is created to capture the subject's features, composition and size of the painting. Once the drawing is approved upon, the painting stage commences. A painting usually takes 6 to 8 weeks to complete. Minor adjustment may be painted in the final stage with the client's direction. All photographs and drawings are the client's property when the finished painting is completed.

A client may have an interest in providing their own photographic material for Ayers to paint from. Perhaps they have a favorite photograph or would like to commission a posthumous portrait.

The fee for a 6" x 8" painting on linen panel is $400 and for a 18"x 24" painting on linen panel is $800. Examples of these are available to view by email.

For an individual subject the prices are as follows:

24" x 18" $4,000
30" x 24" $5,000
36" x 30" $6,000
Extra figures will be an additional charge of 50%.

The commission's fees are paid in 1/3 installments. The signing of the contract, the approval of the drawing and the final approval of the painting.

Fees include photography, drawing and painting. One photographic reshoot is included if necessary. 7% sales tax is added to residents of NJ.

The price does not include shipping costs, framing or traveling expenses of artist and photographer.

Extra large paintings and group portraits can be negotiated with the artist.
